PostSubject: k161 magneto?   Sat 05 Feb 2011, 7:10 pm

Got the ride-a-matic running. But it won't rev up.

While it's cranking you can hear the snap of a high-tension spark.

Went digging and found out that the coil is cracked and leaking a sticky red goo.

I started looking online - not luck. Anyone know where I might get one?
Or is my only real solution to go with a battery ignition?

Thanks.

I wonder if its too far gone to epoxy the crack. It is still working - just has spark jumping around in the crack instead of it all going to the plug. Be worth a try just to see if it would work and for how long. You'd have to completely fill any voids, not just seal over the crack. Question

It's knackered. Cracks running the whole length and in different directions. Pieces are falling off.

Looking online, it looks like similar coils are available - need to re-use the metal bar through the middle.

Wondering if there's a close enough match that will work?

Thanks.

Thanks 312 but that's for battery ignition - I can't get it to fit under the flywheel Wink.

I've found out the part # I need is: 230075 (engine spec suffix is an E):
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=kohler_engines&mn=K161-28118+TRACTOR&dn=catalogs_13721

BUT - they are not to be had anywhere. I've found examples of the part for later model engines for about $100!

Question - should I be able to remove the coil from the bar? I've read that someone was able to replace the Kohler coil with a Tecumseh coil. Is there more than habit holding it on? I want to know before I use additional persuasion on it.

As for keeping it original - it's hidden under the flywheel. The spark will still look Kohler Smile.

She's alive!

I gave up looking for the correct magneto and bought a 12v resistor coil and condenser. Hooked them up today and the motor runs like a top after a minor carb adjustment.

Just need to figure out a place to mount the coil, a proper switch, finish the wiring and get a new coil wire.

Looks like the generator is working. battery was less then 12v before the motor was started and climbed up to 12.5v on a high idle.

I'm hoping to have it drive-able next weekend.
