Bought a 40" spike aerator at a garage sale this morning ($40)......I know that the plug aerators are supposed to be better, but does anyone think that these spike types are any good at all....opinions welcome.....

It depends on what your goal is. In reality, that is compacting the soil because it just pushes down as it rolls. if your goal is to relieve compaction, you are not going to do any good. If you fertilize your yard with a granular fertilizer, it would be beneficial to run the spike aerator over the area first to make small divits for the fertilizer to get down into the soil where it can do some good. Also on slopes, the small divits will hold rain [or irrigated] water better and there will not be as much runoff. Even with the concrete blocks, I doubt a small lightweight unit like that will ever penetrate much more than an inch.
I worked several years for a company that did custom aerating in IN, IL, WI, MN, IA, MO, SD, ND, NE, and KS. They had aerators that would penetrate 18 inches with solid tines or 12 inches with hollow tines [core] and it was designed so the tines kicked as they were pushed down into the soil. This eleminated the compaction at the bottom of the hole. You could watch the truf raise behind the machine and it felt softer to walk on afterwards, much like walking on thick carpet. The problem was it only went 1/2 of one mile per hour to allow time for the tines to penetrate that far into the soil and back without tearing the turf. The Kansas City Chiefs have thier own machine [like I used] and they won't allow players to practice or play on thier field until it has been softened up with one of those aerators. They said it reduced player injuries significantly. I even hauled thier machine to thier training camp the first couple of years they held camp in River Falls, WI.
