PostSubject: engine year and lighting question   Tue 27 Jul 2010, 8:10 pm

Hello to all. I recently was given an old Moto Mower tractor but don't know much about it. I posted some pics and from what I've been told is it is a Sears Custom tractor (eventhough it says Moto Mower)

I haven't been able to find any model number on the tractor itself except for a "710" painted on the side of the hood.

I did find a plate on the engine which says
Model HH100-115180D
Serial 2311E

I got it running like a top now but now I'm trying to get the lights going. There are two headlights and a tail light.

The tractor is electric start so it has a battery obviously but where should the lights get power from. It doesn't seem that the battery is charging. Is this normal. I looked for some wires coming from the engine that would possibly charge the battery but all I found was a 3 wire harness which when I disconnected it, disabled the key to stop the engine.

Firstly, does anyone know what year this engine is (I'm assuming it's the original and will give me an approximate year of the tractor

Secondly......would it be normal for this tractor to have electric start and lights but nothing charging the battery?

I was told to try dissconecting the battery once the tractor was running and nothing happened.

by unhooking your batery cables on the briggs it will stay running coil/points dont need 12v to stay running like the kohlers do

Hi,

Tecumseh HH100 is - horizontal, heavy-duty, 10HP

Searching for "tecumseh dom decode".

The Serial #/DOM 2311E - 2 is the year (not sure which decade), 311 is the day of the year, E is the shift.

Looks like finding the decade appears to be a challenge.

yep tecumseh and is there a starter generator?? if so you need to do some checking to see if it is good and then check the voltage regulator. Which by the way is where the power for the lights would come from. there are some that are the same as roper post some pics and it could help.

Ok guys I did a little bit of poking around on it yesterday. There is a harness coming from the flywheel (3 wires) I unplugged it and it disabled the key (couldn't shut the engine off once it was started)

Put a volt meter on it and I got aprox 50 volts AC if i went from one bottom terminal to the top

If I went from one bottom terminal to the other bottom terminal I got around 11volts AC and the voltage went up if I reved the engine.

I don't know much about this but I'm assuming that the two terminals where I got anywhere from 11v and up depending on the engine rpm is the voltage for the lights and possibly to charge the battery.

The voltage I got around 50 volts must be something to do with the ignition?

I did find a rectangular silver box with fins on it under the tractor. I didn't have a chance to take it off but could this be the voltage regulator? I'll try and take some pics but it's in a tight spot under the tractor

Yes I believe you will find that the wires should go to that box and you should get about 13.8 volts DC going to the battery at high rpm.

Ok I'll check that next time I get a chance and go from there. Thanks

That box is what turns the ac voltage into dc. Don't run ac curent into your lights or battery.

Ok I got a picture of the box that I'm pretty sure converts the AC voltage to DC and regulates it.

I get AC voltage across the two outside black terminals and 12 volts DC on the red terminal (when the battery is connected)

If I rev the engine the AC voltage goes up and down depending on the RPM but the DC voltage on the middle red terminal stays the same

If i disconnect the battery once the engine is running I still get the fluctuating AC voltage on the two black terminals depending on RPM but nothing on the red terminal.

Is it safe to say that I need a new box??? Is there a specific way of testing it?

I cant find any part or model number on it anywhere so is it still possible to get a new one??

I'm not 100% sure, but I think any 3 wire rectifier from a mower should work.
