I've heard that cleaning the magnets on the flywheel is a waste of time. Answer poncho's question, that'll give us a better idea of what we're dealing with. I know the briggs on my wizard mower just had dirty points, once cleaned it had good spark again.

Well, from what I understand, all Briggs built prior to '82 are points engines. I'm sure you know how to date a briggs, but if ya don't just look at the 1st 2 digits of the 3rd set of numbers, which I believe is labeled as the code. With that said, if it is a points engine, you'll need to remove the shroud, ratcheting nut that holds the flywheel on, the flywheel, and the points cover underneath the flywheel to get to the points. I know a good youtube tutorial vid if you need assistance in the above procedure. It really was pretty simple when I cleaned the ones on the Wizard.
