PostSubject: Oil change today, tilling tomorrow   Sat 07 Mar 2009, 8:43 pm

Well, no pics today. DARN!! lol!

I changed the oil in the Gilsons engine and transaxle today. The engine was fairly easy. Very Happy

The transaxle was well... a pain in the... nevermind. lol!
The transaxle had the good old milky brown oil so it was definitely time, it was too full!! Neutral
The shifter has to be removed to change the oil so that was a learning experience, but the deed is done. Very Happy

I didn't worry with the tiller since it was completely rebuilt internally within the last 5 years and only used once or twice since. Very Happy

Of course after servicing it, I just had to try it out lol!

I tilled the first 6-8 feet and it did terrific, so tomorrow will be a good day to till the garden. cheers

By the way, the battery that Dad and I installed when I first brought the Gilson home works well enough to start the Gilson. cheers
I can postpone that expense! Very Happy

Also, as I predicted, my new air cleaner will not show up before I need it, but I still want it! lol!
I will just pressure off some of the dirt with some compressed air for now.

Yeah and if the soil is wet you won't stir up much dust.

Well, today the Gilson and I tilled the garden (the Gilson did more work than I did though. lol! )

It did a fine job, I only went over it once and I will do it again in a few weeks. Very Happy

Then Dad and I spent a few hours freeing up the variable speed lever on the Gilson. All that lever needed to get loose was a torch affraid and a ton od WD-40. I had every linkage off that ran lengthwise before I was done with the project. I made sure to lube it with "anti-seize" so it neer sticks again. Imagine a lever that last moved over 23 years ago moving again!! cheers cheers

After all that work it only goes mabey an eigth of a mile per hour slower.... Neutral

A little piece of advice WD 40 is a water displacement not a penetrating oil. get some PB blaster, kroil or good old mystery oil it will save lots of agravation.

Yes I read an article about it they invented it for NASA as a water displacement hence WD and it took 40 times before it was approved by NASA so they named it WD40

Water displacement or not it has worked for me, and I will continue to use it.

And that is fine. I just know WD40 has worked for me, therefore I prefer it.

Funny, that's the size I tilled. lol! Although I think it is closer to 35'x50' now. lol!

It has been warm the last few days here, the predicted rains never came. I believe that Spring is here.

I will have to till the garden in again in a few weeks, Mom didn't want me to go over it the second time quite yet. I have to set the tiller a deeper next time though, but thats just a simple pin. Very Happy

Ya, it's nice to not have to do any of the actual gardening, of course Mom wont let me near the garden with a tractor mounted culitvator after she plants it. lol!

I got to try out my GT tiller yesterday and I liked it. It wont till quite as deep as the walk behind but it tills it up fine and even.

Check its settings, it might be as simple as it being a simple pin adjustment or two that drops it deeper.

Think I could make it go deeper but it is on a sleeve hitch that does not have much travel. wish I could find one for my 3 point

Ah, I see your problem now. I just learned all my deeper setting than the highest and the tiller won't even lift off the ground!! Sad

That sucks buzz. I plowed the garden with the little chisel plow type thing I found in the weeds lol. My little TOWER OF POWER murray pulled it pretty nice i think. Problem is its made for a sleeve hitch, which i dont have. Anyone care to guess what i do for a lift?
